Language Fair

Last year was the ASLC’s 25th birthday and to celebrate we hosted a travelling language fair for primary and middle school students in the Alice. Students were treated to a range of activities including Japanese cooking and origami, dot painting, Mexican yarn crafts, Chinese paper cutting and Indonesian mask making. It was great to see our young students so interested and engaged in all the activities they participated in. Overall the fair was a huge success with over 800 students participating from 6 primary schools in Alice, remote schools and Centralian Middle School.

We would like to thank our sponsors Power Water, Headspace, Desart, Alice Springs Town Council, Congress, Cancer Council NT & Flynn Drive Community Health Centre for their kind donations.

Japanese Consul Visit

On the 5th of March, the Alice Springs Language Centre was visited by Michiko Makino, Japanese Consul for Information and Culture and Jennifer Schroeder from the Information and Culture section of the Consulate-General of Japan in Sydney as part of 2014 School Visit Program.  Over 100 students from Centralian Middle School and Centralian Senior College took part in a 1 hour presentation which gave students an introduction to Japan, covering such topics as geography, seasons and food. Students were able to try out a traditional Japanese wooden game, Kendama and one of our year 9 students was lucky enough to be able to participate in the kimono demonstration.

Whilst in Alice, Michiko and Jennifer also visited Braitling Primary School and Acacia Hill School.

The Consul was very impressed with the large number of students studying Japanese in Alice Springs and congratulated teachers on the wonderful job they are doing at the Language Centre.
